Holter ECG monitoring
What it is
Continuously records the heart’s electrical activity while you carry on with normal daily activities.
What it is for
Can document intermittent arrhythmias, palpitations, fainting or other rhythm disturbances that may not appear on a brief ECG.
How long it takes
Monitoring generally lasts 24 hours and, when indicated, may continue for 48 hours.
How to prepare
Shower before the device is fitted, avoid creams on the chest and wear comfortable clothing; the device must not get wet.
How it works
The pharmacy applies the electrodes and portable recorder. During monitoring, normal activities can continue, but the device must not get wet; any symptoms or events should be noted in the diary with the time. At the end, the device is returned and the data are sent for specialist interpretation.

24-hour blood pressure monitoring

Shows how blood pressure changes over 24 hours, including during sleep and normal daily activities.
How long it takes
Monitoring lasts 24 hours, with repeated measurements throughout the day and night.
How to prepare
Wear clothing with loose sleeves; stay still and relax your arm during each measurement. The device must not get wet.
How it works
The cuff is fitted in the pharmacy and the first reading is checked before monitoring begins. Over the following 24 hours the device takes multiple automatic readings; during cuff inflation it is important to keep still and relax the arm. The device is then returned and the data are sent for interpretation.
